What is BS EN 14175-3 - Fume cupboards about?  

BS EN 14175 discusses fume cupboards. BS EN 14175-3 is the third part of BS EN 14175 multi-series and discusses type test methods.

BS EN 14175-3 specifies type test methods for the assessment of safety and performance of fume cupboards connected to an exhaust air system. Relevant requirements are specified in EN 14175-2. For terms and their definitions, EN 14175-1 applies. For safety and performance requirements of fume cupboards, EN 14175-2 applies. For on-site test methods of fume cupboards, EN 14175-4 applies. For the type testing and on-site testing of variable air volume (VAV) fume cupboards, EN 14175-6 applies in addition to BS EN 14175-3. For fume cupboards for high heat and acidic load, EN 14175-7 applies. 

Note 1: For the testing of recirculation filtration fume cupboards, EN 17242: —1 applies 

Note 2: For the testing of microbiological safety cabinets, EN 12469 applies.

Work with substances that produce/generate toxic or harmful fumes, vapours, gases, dust, or chemical aerosols should be carried out in a fume cupboard to eliminate or reduce the risk of exposure to an acceptable and safe level. 

BS EN 14175-3 provides you with the test to assess the safety and performance of fume cupboards connected to an exhaust air system. BS EN 14175-3 guides you with test rooms and general test conditions. BS EN 14175-3 guides you with airflow tests that include extract volume flow rate, containment, the robustness of containment, air exchange efficiency, and pressure drop. 

BS EN 14175-3 also guides you with sash tests which include sash suspension test, sash displacement test, protection against splashes, sash stop, and alarm test. What’s changed since the last update?  

BS EN 14175-3:2019 supersedes BS EN 14175-3:2003, which is withdrawn. BS EN 14175-3:2019 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 14175-3:2003. These include: 

  • Introduction was deleted 
  • Scope clarified and reference to EN 14175-4 and EN 14175-6 was added 
  • Inclusion of new terms 3.4 and 3.5 with definitions 
  • Information testing on walk-in fume cupboards clarified 
  • Limitation of usage of SF6 as trace gas according to national legislation;<lorem ipsum>
