What is BS EN 1559-5 - Magnesium alloy castings about?

BS EN 1559 is a European standard on magnesium alloys that discusses the best procedures and specifications on manufacturing high-quality magnesium alloys castings. BS EN 1559-5  is the fifth part of a series of documents on founding. BS EN 1559-5 specifies the additional technical delivery conditions for castings and cast anodes made from magnesium alloys.

BS EN 1559-5 applies to magnesium alloy castings produced in sand or permanent molds or by pressure die casting, centrifugal casting, continuous casting, or investment casting.

NOTE: BS EN 1559-5 does not apply to ingots, bars, billets (or other shapes) for further reprocessing, such as re-melting or extrusion.

Who is BS EN 1559-5 - Magnesium alloy castings for?

BS EN 1559-5 on magnesium alloy castings is relevant to:

  • Magnesium and magnesium alloys foundry

Why should you use BS EN 1559-5- Magnesium alloy castings?

Casting has been the dominant manufacturing process for magnesium components, representing about 98% of structural applications of magnesium. High pressure die casting (HPDC) is the most common method of casting magnesium alloys, and several process variants are being developed for improved casting properties.

BS EN 1559-5 navigates you through the chemical composition, mechanical properties, casting, and test methods.

BS EN 1559-5 exemplifies the required chemical composition and mechanical properties that help you achieve precision in terms of the product specification.

As a user of BS EN 1559-5, you can be ensured of the corresponding requirements for magnesium alloys castings. With obedience and compliance to BS EN 1559-5, you can efficiently manufacture high-quality magnesium alloy castings. With BS EN 1559-5 you can be ensured that the products consistently meet and exceed quality assurance targets.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 1559-5:2017 supersedes BS EN 1559-5:1998 which is withdrawn.

Significant technical changes between BS EN 1559-5:2017 and the previous edition is:

  • Information regarding the inner and outer condition of the casting and related non-destructive testing added
