What is BS EN 1563 about? 

BS EN 1563 defines the grades and the corresponding requirements for spheroidal graphite cast irons. 

BS EN 1563 specifies two groups of spheroidal graphite cast iron grades by a classification based on mechanical properties measured on machined test pieces prepared from cast samples. The first group deals with ferritic to pearlitic grades. The second group deals with solid solution strengthened ferritic grades. 

NOTE 1: BS EN 1563 does not cover technical delivery conditions for iron castings. 

NOTE 2: BS EN 1563 does not cover: 

  • Ausferritic spheroidal graphite cast irons 
  • Low alloyed ferritic spheroidal graphite cast irons 
  • Continuous cast-iron bars 
  • Austenitic cast irons 
  • Spheroidal graphite cast irons used for pipes, fittings, and their joints

BS EN 1563 covers spheroidal graphite cast irons which are divided into two groups: 

  • Ferritic to pearlitic spheroidal graphite cast irons 
  • Solid solution strengthened ferritic spheroidal graphite cast irons 

The material grade is defined by mechanical properties measured on machined test pieces prepared from cast samples. It is well known that the tensile properties and hardness of spheroidal graphite cast irons are interrelated. 

Overall, BS EN 1563 is useful as it describes the property values that apply to spheroidal graphite cast irons cast in sand moulds or moulds of comparable thermal behaviour. 

BS EN 1563 helps identify the specific grades of spheroidal graphite cast irons in order to ensure improved machinability, higher tensile strength, and wear resistance for various applications.

BS EN 1563:2018 supersedes BS EN 1563:2011, which is withdrawn. BS EN 1563:2018 contains following technical changes: 

  • Annex I provide details of significant technical changes between this European Standard and the 2011 edition (previous edition) 
  • Annex J provides details of significant technical changes between the 1997 edition and the 2011 edition
