What is ISO 16181-2about?
ISO 16181-2 is the second part of the multi-series standard ISO 16181. ISO 16181-2 specifies a method for the determination of the content of specific phthalates by pyrolizer/thermal desorption gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (Py/TD-GC-MS). ISO 16181-2 is applicable to all types of footwear materials except textiles.

Why should you use ISO 16181-2?
Footwear is wearing apparel (such as shoes or boots) for the feet. Phthalates are important concerns for plastic and rubber footwear. Phthalates or phthalate esters are a group of chemical compounds that are used as plasticizers to increase the flexibility of plastic. Colourless, odourless high phthalates are used in a multitude of products that demand high performance, long-lasting wear, and durability. The sample is directly introduced into a pyrolizer; the phthalates are thermally extracted under a specific heat zone and then transferred to the gas chromatograph. Phthalate compounds are separated by the gas chromatographic capillary column and detected by a mass spectrometer.
ISO 16181—2 specifies a method for the determination of the content of specific phthalates.
The method given in ISO 16181—2 can detect phthalates with a limit of the quantification of 30 mg (about the weight of a grain of rice)/kg. Results below 30 mg (about the weight of a grain of rice)/kg should be reported as not detected as it is for the safety precautions to wear footwear.
