What is ISO 16186 about ?

ISO 16186 is a series on footwear. Footwear refers to garments  worn on the feet, which typically serves the purpose of protection  against adversities of the environment such as wear from ground textures and temperature. ISO 16186 specifies a method for the determination of the content of dimethyl fumarate (DMF) by gas chromatography with a single quadrupole mass spectrometer (GC-MS) or tandem quadrupole mass spectrometer (GC-MS/MS). It is the responsibility of users of ISO 16186 to take appropriate measures to ensure the safety and health of personnel and the environment prior to the application of ISO 16186 and to determine the applicability of regulatory limitations for this purpose.

Note 1: ISO 16186 is applicable to all types of footwear and footwear components except metal parts.

Note 2: ISO 16186 involves hazardous materials, operations, and equipment. It does not purport to address all the safety or environmental problems associated with its use

Who is ISO 16186 for ?

ISO 16186 on footwear is useful for:

  • Footwear manufacturing industry
  • Footwear testing institution
  • Quality control personnel

Why should you use ISO 16186 ?

Footwear in the manner of shoes therefore primarily serves the purpose to ease locomotion and prevent injuries. Footwear can also be used for fashion and adornment as well as to indicate the status or rank of the person within a social structure. DMF testing is the testing of Dimethyl fumarate in products such as finished footwear and furniture. Dimethyl fumarate (DMF) has good anti-fungal properties and has been associated with mould inhibitor sachets used as part of the packaging process for finished footwear and furniture products. DMF has been found in sachets placed within the furniture structure or inside the shoe box, often labelled as ‘anti-mould agent’. Its function is as a biocide to kill any mould that may arise from storage and transportation from hot and humid climates. ISO 16186 specifies a method for the determination of the content of dimethyl fumarate.

ISO 16186 helps the users to detect the DMF for the betterment and long durability of the footwear. DMF has good anti-fungal properties and has been associated with mould inhibitor sachets used as part of the packaging process for finished footwear and furniture products so it is beneficial for footwear towards i5ts durability. The best good leads to increases in the demand for the good which automatically increases the profit of the company. Using ISO 16186 you can specify a method for the determination of the content of dimethyl fumarate (DMF) by gas chromatography with a single quadrupole mass spectrometer (GC-MS) or tandem quadrupole mass spectrometer (GC-MS/MS).

What’s changed since the last update ?

BS EN ISO 16186:2021 supersedes ISO/TS 16186:2012. BS EN ISO 16186:2021 includes some technical changes with respect to ISO/TS 16186:2012. These include:

  • Gas chromatography with tandem quadrupole mass spectrometer (GC-MS/MS)
  • In Sampling desiccant treated as a note
  • In Clean-up new clean up procedure
