What is BS EN 16801-Determination of methylmercury in foodstuffs of marine origin about?

BS EN 16801 is a European standard on the determination of elements and their chemical species that discusses the determination of methylmercury in foodstuffs of marine origin by isotope dilution GC-ICP-MS methods to ensure it is safe for consumption.

BS EN 16801 describes a method for the determination of mono methylmercury (MMHg) in foodstuffs of marine origin.

The method specified under BS EN 16801 has been validated in an interlaboratory test on mussel tissue, squid muscle, crab claw muscle, dogfish liver, whale meat, cod muscle, and Greenland halibut muscle (all freeze-dried) with mass fractions from 0,04 mg/kg to 3,6 mg/kg dry weight according to ISO 5725-2

Note: Laboratory experiences have shown that the method specified under BS EN 16801 also applies to fresh samples

Who is BS EN 16801-Determination of methylmercury in foodstuffs of marine origin for?

BS EN 16801 on the determination of methylmercury in foodstuffs of marine origin is useful for:

  • Food scientists
  • Food technologists
  • Food laboratories
  • Food health and safety departments

Why should you use BS EN 16801-Determination of methylmercury in foodstuffs of marine origin

Methylmercury is commonly found in fish, both freshwater and saltwater. The accumulation of most metals (except mercury) in fish and seafood is usually inversely related to an organism's age and size. However, mercury and methylmercury concentrations in seafood increase with the organism's age.

BS EN 16801 provides you with apparatus and equipment, procedures, ICP-MS conditions, procedures for the ICP-MS and GC-ICP-MS, quality control, calculation, and much more.

The methods and procedures provided by BS EN 16801 assist you in determining methylmercury in foodstuffs of marine origin, improve the quality of food and ensure reduction in severe health issues due to consumption of methylmercury content.

With obedience and compliance to BS EN 16801, you can enhance the efficacy of the foodstuffs of marine origin and manufacture a standardized product.
