What is BS EN 15166-Safety and hygiene requirements for automatic back splitting machines about?

BS EN 15166 is a European standard on food processing machinery that discusses the safety and hygiene requirements for automatic back splitting machines to ensure protection to workers against machinery hazards.

BS EN 15166 applies to automatic back splitting machines and specifies safety and health requirements for machines used in slaughterhouses in order to fully automatically split meat animals (beef and pork) along the back-bone axis, splitting the carcass into two parts.

BS EN 15166 deals with all significant hazards, hazardous situations and events relevant to automatic back splitting machines, when they are used as intended and under conditions of misuse which are foreseeable by the manufacturer.

BS EN 15166 deals with the significant hazards, hazardous situations and events during transport, assembly and installation, commissioning and use.

The machines concerned by BS EN 15166 are those used in slaughterhouses. They are fitted with a cutting device and are driven by electric, hydraulic and/or pneumatic energy.

The utilized cutting tools are:

  • Circular saws
  • Splitting tools

Three types of machines are considered

  • Splitting machines for pork carcasses, type A (splitter)
  • Splitting machines for pork carcasses, type B (circular saw)
  • Splitting machines for beef carcasses, type C (circular saw)

Who is BS EN 15166-Safety and hygiene requirements for automatic back splitting machines for?

BS EN 15166 on the safety and hygiene requirements for automatic back splitting machines is useful for:

  • Automatic back splitting machine manufacturers
  • Automatic back splitting machine test personnel
  • Automatic back splitting machine designers
  • Occupational health and safety departments
  • Risk assessment authorities
  • Quality assurance departments

Why should you use BS EN 15166-Safety and hygiene requirements for automatic back splitting machines

Safeguards are essential to protect workers from injury. Any machine part, function, or process that might cause injury should be safeguarded. When the operation of a machine may result in a contact injury to the operator or others in the area, the hazard should be removed or controlled.

BS EN 15166 provides you with guidance on a list of significant hazards, safety, and hygiene requirements and/or protective measures, verification of safety and hygiene requirements and/or protective measures, information for use, etc.

The safety and hygiene requirements provided by BS EN 15166 assist you in improving the performance and quality of forming machines, enhancing the safety, and ensuring a reduction in the risk to workers against mechanical hazards, electrical hazards, hazards generated by hydraulic or pneumatic, hazards generated by the loss of stability, hazards generated by noise.

With obedience and compliance to BS EN 15166, you can enhance forming machines effectiveness and efficacy and manufacture a standardized high-quality product.
