What is BS EN 13862 - Safety of floor cutting-off machines about?

This European standard is a safety standard that helps its users to produce floor cutting-off machines that meet the minimum safety requirements and enhance the safety of their operators

BS EN 13862 applies to pedestrian controlled floor sawing machines having power feed, manual feed or hand feed for sawing, grooving and milling floor surfaces made of concrete, asphalt and similar mineral building materials where the main power is supplied by electric or internal combustion prime engine.

These machines are designed for use with rotating cutting-off wheels for wet and dry cutting. These cutting-off wheels can be either a diamond cutting-off wheel or a boron nitride cutting-off wheel.

Note: BS EN 13862 does not apply to:

  • Self-propelled ride-on floor sawing machines
  • Machines moving along a rail
  • Hand-held portable cutting off machines for construction materials mounted on a mobile support, to be used as floor saws
  • Remote controlled machines

Who is BS EN 13862 - Safety of floor cutting-off machines for?

BS EN 13862 on the safety of floor cutting-off machines is useful for:

  • Manufacturers of floor cutting-off machines
  • Quality control personnel
  • Product safety inspection authorities

Why should you use BS EN 13862 - Safety of floor cutting-off machines?

Floor cutting-off machines are commonly used in the construction industry to mill or polish surfaces of concrete, asphalt or similar mineral building materials. These machines although highly reliable can cause some serious harm to their operators or other individuals in case of accidents.

BS EN 13862 deals with all significant hazards pertinent to floor sawing machines, when they are used as intended and under the conditions foreseen by the manufacturer.

BS EN 13862 specifies the appropriate technical measures to eliminate or reduce risks arising from significant hazards.

In conclusion, the guidelines of BS EN 13862 help you to produce floor cutting-off machines that meet the minimum safety requirements and thereby improve their safety ratings.
