What is PD IEC/TS 62715-5-2 - Curved display devices optical characteristics about?

A flexible display is a visual output surface that is designed to be able to withstand being folded, bent and twisted. PD IEC/TS 62715-5-2 is a Technical Report that discusses flexible display devices.

PD IEC/TS 62715-5-2 specifies the general rules and the details of optical measuring methods from a fixed point (the so-called vantage point) for curved emissive and transmissive type displays such as OLED and LCD in darkroom conditions. PD IEC/TS 62715-5-2 focuses on concave shape large screen displays (non-portable) around a horizontal and/or vertical axis with fixed or variable curvature radius.

The measuring method stipulated in PD IEC/TS 62715-5-2 is applied to the curved display modules under the following states:

  • Vantage-point luminance variation by viewing angles
  • Vantage-point contrast ratio variation by viewing angles
  • Vantage-point chromaticity variation of white colour by viewing angles
  • Vantage-point colour gamut area variation by viewing angles
  • Vantage-point chromaticity variation of primary colours by viewing angles
  • Luminance uniformity and its uniformity variation by viewing angles
  • Chromaticity uniformity and its uniformity variation by viewing angles
  • Viewing angle of half-luminance
  • Viewing angle of half-contrast

Who is PD IEC/TS 62715-5-2 - Curved display devices optical characteristics for?

PD IEC/TS 62715-5-2 oncurved display devices optical characteristics’ is useful for:

  • Manufacturers of electronic display devices
  • Manufacturers and suppliers of flexible display devices
  • Product design engineers / innovation teams
  • Quality control and testing agencies

Why should you use PD IEC/TS 62715-5-2 - Curved display devices optical characteristics?

Flexible displays have a diversity of shapes in comparison with any other non-flexible electronic display, but also present the challenge of distorted display.

PD IEC/TS 62715-5-2 provides guidance on standard measuring conditions, standard measuring equipment, and measuring methods of optical characteristics of fixed curved display devices.

Since vantage point is an important factor in viewing flexible or curved displays, this has been elaborated in PD IEC/TS 62715-5-2 from a perspective or horizontal and vertical vantage points. Measuring layout, screen visual angle, as well as minimum curvature radius have been discussed from a measurement perspective in PD IEC/TS 62715-5-2

Optical tests dark rooms and under directed illumination using PD IEC/TS 62715-5-2 in varied ambient lighting conditions have also been discussed from a measurement perspective. The measurement circumstances are chosen based on the equipment configuration that delivers the most trustworthy findings for a specific viewing direction between the light measurement device (LMD), the display module, and the light source.

PD IEC/TS 62715-5-2 helps you with detecting distortions and helps in measuring the performance of the display devices. These measurement guidelines provided in PD IEC/TS 62715-5-2 are a step towards evolving newer, more sophisticated flexible display devices for your customers.
