What is BS EN 13555 about?

BS EN 13555 specifies the gasket parameters required by EN 1591-1 and provides the test procedures for establishing the values of these parameters.

Note 1: Gaskets that are wholly based upon elastomers, or based upon elastomers with only the inclusion of particulate fillers or particulate reinforcement, as opposed to gaskets combining elastomers, fillers and fibrous reinforcement, are beyond the scope of this document.

Note 2: The testing procedures given might apply to gaskets of other shapes and dimensions.

Note 3: These procedures are not for routine quality control purposes.

Who is BS EN 13555 for?

BS EN 13555 on Flanges and their joints is applicable to:

  •  Manufacturer of steel pipes lines
  • Manufacturer of pumps
  • Plumber

Why should you use BS EN 13555?

Flange and their joints are used in the connection of pipes. The loading test is conducted which helps in loading and unloading of the gasket at required and at a consistent rate.

BS EN 13555 helps in achieving high-performance rate, sealing materials and gasket style by using the leakage measurement method. The test result is helpful in achieving thickness for sheet materials in the flange and their joints. Data generated while testing is not only useful in the calculation method but also useful in the development of the gasket in the flange and its joints.

BS EN 13555 specifies the gasket parameters and test procedures relevant to the design rules for gaskets. BS EN 13555 is also helpful in “Type Testing” of gaskets and gasket material in the flange and their joints.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 13555:2021 supersedes BS EN 13555:2014. BS EN 13555:2021 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 13555:2014. These include:

  • In Clause 3 the list of definitions has been revised
  • In Clause 5 the list of gasket parameters has been revised
  • In 8.5 on the determination of QSmax has been revised
  • A new informative Annex I on the guideline for interpretation of test results and acceptable
  • Modification of measured characteristics has been added
