What is BS EN 12416-1 Powder systems about?

BS EN 12416-1 discusses components for gas extinguishing systems. The aim of the BS EN 12416 series is to provide best industry requirements for the safe and reliable use of fixed firefighting systems, such that they play a positive role during a fire emergency.

BS EN 12416-1 is a first part of the BS EN 12416 series that specifies requirements and test methods for materials, construction and performance of components intended for use in powder firefighting systems complying with prEN 12416-2:2000.

The components covered are as follows:

  • Powder containers
  • Expellant gas container assemblies
  • Pressure regulators and gauges
  • actuators
  • Main isolating valves and selector valves
  • Nozzles

The components are suitable for powder firefighting systems for general use in buildings and other construction works. In areas with a risk of explosion, earthquake zones, extreme environmental conditions e.g. marine, offshore, mining or aircraft additional considerations apply. BS EN 12416-1 covers components for use in powder extinguishing systems complying with prEN 12416-2:2000.

Note: It does not cover, for example, pipes and fittings which are covered by more general standards for which requirements and recommendations are given in prEN 12416-2:2000. Nor does it cover fire detectors or electrical control and indicating equipment.

Who is BS EN 12416-1 Powder systems for?

BS EN 12416-1 on powder systems is useful for:

  • Powder system components manufactures
  • Powder extinguishing systems manufacturers and suppliers
  • Installers
  • Entities involved in fire safety engineering
  • Quality control and testing department
  • Fire safety departments
  • Local authorities
  • Regulatory bodies

Why should you use BS EN 12416-1 Powder systems?

Powder extinguishing systems are ideal where sudden fire ”knock-down“ is necessary. To prevent hazardous situations, it is necessary that gas extinguishing systems and their accessories are designed and built as per the best industry performance requirements.

BS EN 12416-1 provides you with requirements and test methods that can be followed while manufacturing powder system components. This can ensure that components are efficient and help in extinguishing fire immediately.

BS EN 12416-1 helps in the evaluation of conformity of product by using initial type testing and factory production control method that verifies if the performance declarations represent the true behaviour of the product.

If you are a manufacturer, BS EN 12416-1 can ensure that your powder systems components contribute to the operational efficiency of the powder fire systems and contribute to a successful fire response.
