What is BS EN 15004-6 about?

BS EN 15004-6 is part sixth of a multi-series containing specific requirements for gaseous fire-extinguishing systems, with respect to the HFC 23 extinguishant.

BS EN 15004-6 includes details of physical properties, specification, usage, and safety aspects and is applicable to systems operating at a nominal pressure of 41 bar without nitrogen super pressurization and 70 bar super pressurized with nitrogen.

Who is BS EN 15004-6 for?

BS EN 15004-6 on  gas extinguishing systems for HFC 23 extinguishant is useful for:

  • Healthcare industries
  • Designers of fire extinguishing systems
  • Fire and safety department
  • Disaster management department
  • Emergency response teams
  • Fire engineers
  • Oil industries

Why should you use BS EN 15004-6?

Gas extinguishing systems are fire extinguishing systems that utilize gaseous extinguishing agents to extinguish a fire via oxygen displacement. HFC 23 which is used as an extinguishant, is a colourless, almost odourless, electrically non-conductive gas with a density 2,4 times that of air. Such gaseous extinguishants are used when water, foam or powder are ineffective and may cause damages.

BS EN 15004-6 ensures structural stability during fire exposure and restricts fire spread as much as possible. They aim to allow adequate time for firefighting and rescue operations while limiting monetary losses.

As a result, users of BS EN 15004-6, will be able to effectively remove heat energy from the fire in such a way that combustion cannot occur. In addition, free radicals released during combustion inhibit chain reactions of the fire and consequently end fires.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 15004-6:2020 supersedes BS EN 15004‑6:2008, which is withdrawn.

Some of the following changes are:

  • European foreword: Part 3 was removed from the list
  • The Foreword of ISO 14520-10 was removed
  • Scope: Nominal pressure level 50 bar was added
  • Fill density: 70 bar storage containers were added
  • Environmental properties: new clause added
