What is BS EN 12259-9 - Deluge alarm valves about?

BS EN 12259 is a European standard that discusses components for sprinkler and water spray systems that are a part of fixed firefighting systems.

BS EN 12259-9 is the ninth part in the multi-series that specifies requirements, test methods, evaluation of conformity, and marking of deluge alarm valves with a nominal size range DN40 to DN250 intended to be used for fire safety.

BS EN 12259-9 is applicable to clapper type and diaphragm type valves.

Note:  BS EN 12259-9 is not applicable to elastomeric sleeve type valves and does not include rules for design, installation, and maintenance of fire protection water spray systems.

Who is BS EN 12259-9 - Deluge alarm valves for?

BS EN 12259-9 on deluge alarm valves is relevant to:

  • Manufacturers and suppliers of sprinkler and water spray systems
  • Manufacturers and suppliers of fixed firefighting equipment
  • Manufacturers of deluge alarm valve systems
  • Product designers
  • Installers
  • Certification bodies

Why should you use BS EN 12259-9 - Deluge alarm valves?

A deluge system is an automatic fire protection system using a deluge alarm valve assembly, which is operated by auxiliary means to admit water into a system of sprayers.

BS EN 12259-9 covers guidance on product characteristics for operational reliability, and durability. It also provides the procedures for endurance test and salt mist corrosion test that can help identify whether the deluge alarm valve is resistant to distortion, cracks, delamination, loosening or displacement, thus avoiding overall product failure. If you are a manufacturer, guidance on test methods and requirements provided by BS EN 12259-9, is essential for the optimal functioning of deluge alarm valves, and thus of the overall fixed fire-fighting systems. As a result, you can ensure the efficient release of water to sprinkler heads in the event of a fire outbreak.

Additionally, BS EN 12259-9 can also help you establish an efficient factory production control (FPC) system to ensure that the products placed on the market comply with the declared performance of the essential characteristics.
