What is BS EN 60384-3 - Fixed tantalum electrolytic capacitors with solid (MnO2) electrolytes?

BS EN 60384-3 is an international standard that discusses fixed capacitors for use in electronic equipment. It details best practices for ensuring safety and protecting devices.

BS EN 60384-3 applies to fixed tantalum electrolytic surface mount capacitors with solid (MnO2) electrolyte primarily intended for d.c. applications for use in electronic equipment.

Who is BS EN 60384-3 - Fixed tantalum electrolytic capacitors with solid (MnO2) electrolyte for?

BS EN 60384-3 on fixed capacitors for use in electronic equipment is relevant to:

  • Manufacturers of electronic equipment
  • Sensor and monitoring device manufacturer
  • Electrician
  • Certification bodies
  • Quality inspection

Why should you use BS EN 60384-3 - Fixed tantalum electrolytic capacitors with solid (MnO2) electrolytes?

In electric appliances or gadgets, a fixed capacitor aids in maintaining a steady charge and energy output. In general, fixed capacitors are characterized in terms of the dielectric material used to make them.

The object of BS EN 60384-3 is to prescribe preferred ratings and characteristics and to select from IEC 60384-1:2016 the appropriate quality assessment procedures, tests and measuring methods and to give general performance requirements for this type of capacitor.

The test conditions and performance requirements for the qualification approval on the basis of the fixed sample size procedure are identical to those for quality conformance inspection.

BS EN 60384-3 provides guidance on visual examination and check of dimensions to verify the materials, design, construction, and physical dimensions.

BS EN 60384-3 will help to:

  • Make capacitors easier to recognize and compare to other capacitors
  • Find a balance between safety and environmental standards.

The test methods and procedures are mentioned in BS EN IEC 603843 are useful in performing the test and also help in producing better quality electronic devices. Adherence to BS EN 60384-3 will aid in the suppression of external interference and the protection of the device.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 60384-3:2016 supersedes BS EN 60384-3:2006 which is withdrawn.  BS EN 60384-3:2016 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 60384-3:2006. These include:

  • Revision of the structure in accordance with ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2:2011 (sixth edition) to the extent practicable, and harmonization between other similar kinds of documents.
  • In addition, Clause 4 and all the tables have been reviewed in order to prevent duplications and contradictions
