What is BS EN 60695-5-1 – Fire hazard testing about? 

BS EN 60695-5-1 is a European standard that discusses the general guidance using the assessment of potential corrosion damage by fire effluent for fire hazard testing. Why should you use BS EN 60695-5-1 – Fire hazard testing? 

Fire effluent is a totality of gases and/or aerosols (including suspended particles) created by combustion or pyrolysis. Corrosion damage is physical and/or chemical damage or impaired function caused by chemical action. 

BS EN 60695-5-1 provides general guidance on the corrosivity of fire effluent in which the electrochemical equipment and systems consist of three corrosion damage which is caused by fire effluent in the situation such as: 

  • Within electrotechnical equipment and systems when exposed to fire effluent caused by unusual, localized, internal sources of excessive heat and ignition 
  • Within electrotechnical equipment and systems when exposed to fire effluent caused by external sources of flame or excessive heat 
  • Within building structures when exposed to fire effluent is emitted from electrotechnical equipment and systems. 

BS EN 60695-5-1 provides four types of corrosion damage effects that help you in the fire hazard testing: 

  • Metal loss 
  • Moving parts becoming immobile 
  • Bridging of conductor circuits 
  • Formation of a non-conducting layer on contact surfaces.
