What is ISO 7240‑13 about?
ISO 7240‑13 is the 13th part of the ISO 7240 multi-series. ISO 7240‑13 specifies the requirements for compatibility and connectability assessment of the components of fire detection and alarm systems, fire protection systems and voice alarm systems. ISO 7240‑13 only includes system requirements when these are necessary for compatibility assessment.
ISO 7240‑13 also specifies requirements for the integrity of the fire detection and fire alarm system when connected to other systems.
ISO 7240‑13 does not specify how the system is designed, installed and used in any particular application. ISO 7240‑13 does not cover components or functions which are not included in the fire detection and alarm systems (FDAS), such as functions performed by a building management system.
The requirements for the transmission path used for a distributed function are covered by a relevant ISO standard and not by ISO 7240‑13
ISO 7240‑13 applies to systems where the components are connected to control-and-indicating equipment (CIE) and where the components are interconnected by electrical wires or optical fibre or by radiofrequency links or by any combination of these.
Who is ISO 7240‑13 for?
ISO 7240‑13 on fire detection and alarm systems is beneficial for
- Manufacturer of fire detection and alarm systems
- User of fire detection and alarm systems
- Fire engineer
Why should you use ISO 7240‑13?
The purpose of fire detection is to detect a fire at the earliest practicable moment and to give signals and indications so that appropriate action can be taken.
ISO 7240‑13 provide guidance on assessment methods and tests concerned about the overall compatibility and connectivity of components into fire detection and alarm system.
As a user of ISO 7240‑13 use can ensure that high standards of reliability, safety, and security are achieved, together with acceptable standards of performance
ISO 7240‑13 can help anyone who installs, maintains, or uses Fire detection and alarm
systems to stay up to date with current regulatory and legislative requirements. Overall ISO 7240‑13 assist the user in improving fire safety.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS ISO 7240‑13:2020 cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 7240‑13:2005), which has been technically revised.
The main changes compared to the previous edition are as follows:
- ISO 7240‑13takes into account new techniques in communication and the availability of new technologies and concepts.
- ISO 7240‑13 applies to electrical wires, optical fibre or radiofrequency connections. The previous edition was only applicable to electrical wires.
- Clarification introduced that it is possible to use this document to establish compatibility with fire protection equipment such as sprinkler flow switches and electrically activated sprinkler heads.
- Levels (field, control and management) and a network transmission path for the basis of system configuration were introduced.
- References to EN standards have been replaced with the appropriate IEC standard references.
- Introduction of Example of levels used in FDAS(Annex A), Classification of functions of the FDAS(Annex B), Example methodology for theoretical analysis(Annex C), Software design documentation(Annex D), Flowchart for assessment of compatibility/connectivity(Annex E)
