What is ISO 21618 about?
ISO 21618 describes a test method that covers the determination of fracture resistance of monolithic ceramics at room temperature by the indentation fracture (IF) method. The IF method is only applicable to dense ceramics. But if it is necessary to evaluate slightly porous ceramics through the IF method, the porosity shall be described in the test report to show the precision of measurements.
ISO 21618 is intended for use with dense monolithic ceramics and whisker- or particulate reinforced ceramics which are regarded as macroscopically homogeneous. It does not include monolithic silicon nitride ceramics for bearing balls and continuous-fibre-reinforced ceramics composites.
Indentation fracture resistance as defined in this document is not to be equated with fracture toughness determined using other test methods such as KIsc and KIpb.
Who is ISO 21618 for?
ISO 21618 on fine ceramics is useful for:
- Fine ceramics and ceramic products manufacturers
- Testing laboratories
- Inspection bodies
- Quality control personnel
- Biomedical sectors
Why should you use ISO 21618?
ISO 21618 simplifies the process of material development, material comparison, quality assurance, characterization and reliability data generation of dense monolithic ceramics.
ISO 21618 helps you by providing with test method for determining fracture resistance of monolithic ceramics at room temperature by indentation fracture (IF) method, which can be useful for various industries that use ceramic products. This would be crucial to ensure optimal operational efficiency, strength and long service-life for your specific engineering and product needs.
ISO 21618 provides you with guidelines for the unacceptable indentations. The number of both valid indentations and total indentations is described in the test report to show the precision of measurements.
With best-practice guidance on testing of monolithic ceramics and materials in ISO 21618, you will be able to incorporate standardized methods to evaluate the overall performance of ceramic products. It will enable you to make the right choice based on chemical composition as per your specified engineering and industrial needs.
