What is ISO 23242 about?

ISO 23242 describes a test method for the flexural strength of monolithic ceramic thin plates at room temperature by three-point bending or four-point bending.

ISO 23242 is intended for use with monolithic ceramics and whisker- or particulate-reinforced ceramics which are regarded as macroscopically homogeneous. It does not include continuous-fibre-reinforced ceramics composites.

ISO 23242 is applicable to ceramic thin plates with a thickness from 0,2 mm to 1,0 mm. ISO 23242 is for material development, material comparison, quality assurance, characterization and reliability data generation.

Who is ISO 23242 for?

ISO 23242 on fine ceramics is useful for:

  • Fine ceramic manufacturers
  • Automotive industries
  • Electrical and electronics industries
  • Power and defence industries
  • Testing laboratories
  • Quality control professionals

Why should you use ISO 23242

Monolithic ceramics have special features, such as reliability, durability and resistance to high temperatures, which makes them essential in some of the more demanding applications. These ceramics can be fabricated without a reinforcement material and have a polycrystalline microstructure.

ISO 23242 provides you with test procedures to help you seamlessly evaluate  the flexural strength of monolithic ceramic and materials. The test procedures include information on initial dimensions measurement for specimen type identification, bend test fixture, fixture cleaning, protection from fracture fragments, three-point flexural strength, and four-point flexural strength.

ISO 23242 gives guidance on test piece preparation, shape and dimensions of test piece and allows several options for specimen preparation. The information may be used for material development, control of manufacturing, material comparison, characterization, reliability and design data generation for tubular components.

Overall, the accuracy of the ISO 23242 compliant test results will help you in improving quality of the fine ceramics
