What is ISO 26443 Evaluation of adhesion of ceramic coatings about ?

ISO 26443 is one of the hosts of international standards that focus on fine ceramics.

ISO 26443 specifies a method for the qualitative evaluation of the adhesion of ceramic coatings up to 20 μm thick by indentation with a Rockwell diamond indenter. The formation of cracks after indentation may also reveal cohesive failure. The indentations are made with a Rockwell hardness test instrument.

The method described in ISO 26443 may also be suitable for evaluating the adhesion of metallic coatings.

Note: The test is not suitable for elastic coatings on hard substrates.

Who is ISO 26443 Evaluation of adhesion of ceramic coatings for ?

ISO 26443 on evaluating the adhesion of ceramic coating by using the Rockwell indentation test is useful for:

  • Manufacturers of fine ceramic products
  • Designers of fine ceramic products
  • Quality control personnel

Why should you use ISO 26443 Evaluation of adhesion of ceramic coatings ?

Coating adhesion is an important aspect of fine ceramic components as a stronger level of coating adhesion protects the ceramic from external stresses and degradation and enhances durability and longevity of the ceramic.

ISO 26443 helps you perform the Rockwell indentation test accurately by providing you with the necessary details on apparatus requirements and the step-by-step procedure of the method. ISO 26443 also classifies the test results to determine the adhesion quality of ceramic coatings.

Overall, the guidelines of ISO 26443 enable you to verify and grade the coating adhesion quality of fine ceramic components.
