What is BS EN ISO 17142 - Fatigue properties about ?

BS EN ISO 17142 is an international standard on fine ceramics which covers determination of fatigue properties of ceramic composites at constant amplitude. 

BS EN ISO 17142 specifies the conditions for the determination of properties at constant-amplitude of load or strain in uniaxial tension/tension or in uniaxial tension/compression cyclic fatigue of ceramic matrix composite materials (CMCs) with fibre reinforcement for temperature up to 1 700 °C in air at atmospheric pressure.  

BS EN ISO 17142 applies to all ceramic matrix composites with fibre reinforcement, unidirectional (1D), bi-directional (2D), and tri-directional (xD, where 2 < x ≤ 3).

Ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) are a subgroup of composite materials and a subgroup of ceramics. They consist of ceramic fibers embedded in a ceramic matrix. The fibers and the matrix both can consist of any ceramic material, whereby carbon and carbon fibers can also be regarded as a ceramic material. 

The influence and quality of the fiber interface can be evaluated through mechanical properties. 

CMC's were derived to improve the fracture toughness of ceramics. Determining the quality of the CMC is done through testing of mechanical properties, typically in bending, compression, or tension. Bend testing the ceramics perpendicular to the ceramic fibers is a valid way to determine how the fibers have improved the fatigue properties of the composite.
