What is BS EN 6224 on Requirements for soft boards about?

BS EN 6224 is an international standard that includes specifications and requirements for fibreboards.

BS EN 6224 specifies the requirements for soft boards as defined in EN 316, with a density from 230 kg/m3 to 400 kg/m3.

The values listed in BS EN 6224 relate to product properties, but they are not characteristic values to be used in design calculations.

BS EN 6224 explains the general specifications such as requirements for general-purpose boards, boards for use in dry conditions, boards for use in humid conditions, boards for use in external conditions, load-bearing boards, verification of compliance, and marking for soft boards.

Who is BS EN 6224 on Requirements for soft boards for?

BS EN 6224 on Requirements for soft boards is useful for:

  • Manufacturers and suppliers of soft boards
  • Dealers and distributors of soft boards
  • Designers and developers of soft boards
  • Paper and board mills

Why should you use BS EN 6224 on Requirements for soft boards?

Softboards are utilized widely for insulation. Softboards insulate against the cold and also prevent overheating during the summer months.

BS EN 6224 gives you requirements for soft boards that comply with the general requirements together with the relevant requirements set out for a global standard. It gives you specifications to meet certain values in the case of swelling in thickness and other properties, based on the mean test values for individual panels and calculated for soft boards in accordance with international standards.

BS EN 6224 gives you the values that help you ensure both bending strength and modulus of elasticity of soft boards that can be applied to test results obtained in any direction in the plane of the panel. Also, with the exception of swelling in thickness, the values given in here characterize the moisture content in the material corresponding to a temperature of 20 °C and relative humidity which helps you enhance the quality of soft boards.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 6224:2019 supersedes BS EN 6224:2009, which is withdrawn. BS EN 6224:2019 includes the following changes:

  • Bending strength for thickness range > 36 mm reduced
  • Normative references updated
  • Editorially revised
