What is ISO 10352 about? 

ISO 10352 specifies a method for the determination of the mass per unit area. It also specifies five methods (Method A to Method E) for the determination of the fibre mass per unit area of moulding compounds and prepregs. The five methods are as follows: 

  • Method A: Extraction by Soxhlet 
  • Method B: Extraction by immersion insolvent in a beaker 
  • Method C: Decomposition by loss ignition 
  • Method D: Extraction by wet combustion 
  • Method E: Method by calculation 

ISO 10352 is applicable to the following types of materials: 

  • Moulding compound and pre-impregnated unidirectional sheet, tape, fabric, and mats 
  • Prepregs in which any type of reinforcement (aramid, carbon, glass, etc.) and any type of matrix thermosetting or thermoplastic) has been used 

Note- ISO 10352 is not applicable to the following types of prepregs: 

  • Those containing reinforcements that are soluble (or partly soluble) in the solvents used to dissolve the resin

ISO 10352 on the determination of mass per unit area and fibre mass per unit area is useful for: 

  • Fiber-reinforced plastics manufacturer  
  • Fiber-reinforced plastics testers 

Why should you use ISO 10352?  

Fiber-reinforced plastic is a composite material made of a polymer matrix reinforced with fibres. The moulding compound is the base material for moulded plastic products. Prepreg is used to describe a reinforcement that has been pre-impregnated with a resin system prior to use. 

ISO 10352 specifies the methods to determine the mass per unit area and fibre mass per unit area. 

ISO 10352 specifies the following methods for determining the mass per unit: 

  • Extraction by Soxhlet and  
  • Extraction by immersion in a solvent in a beaker 
  • Decomposition by loss ignition 

Determining the mass per unit area of Fiber-reinforced plastics helps you determine the capacity of the product against weight, pressure, heat, water, and gas flow. 

What is changed since the last update? 

BS EN ISO 10352:2020 supersedes ISO 10352:2010. BS EN ISO 10352:2020includes some technical changes with respect to ISO 10352:2010. These include: 

  • Determination of fibre mass per unit area by Method A, Method B, Method C, Method D, and Method E has been added
