What is BS EN 61753-022-2 - Fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components about?

BS EN 61753 is a series on fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components. Fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components do not require electrical-to-optical or optical-to-electrical conversion during their operation. BS EN 61753-022-2 contains the minimum requirements and severities that a fibre optic connector terminated on multimode fibre must satisfy in order to be categorized as meeting the IEC standard category C – Controlled Environment, as defined in Annex A of IEC 61753-1:2007.

Who is BS EN 61753-022-2 - Fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components for?

BS EN 61753-022-2 on fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components is useful for:

  • Telecommunication component manufacturers
  • Telecommunication equipment manufacturers
  • Design engineers
  • Quality control personnel

Why should you use BS EN 61753-022-2 - Fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components

Fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components are widely used by people as a promising solution for modern access to telecommunication networks. BS EN 61753-022-2 describes test methods that are in accordance with the IEC 61300 series. The connector shall be terminated onto multimode fibre as per IEC 60793-2-10, fibre type A1a or A1b, in either secondary coated or reinforced cable format. Each test defines the number of samples to be evaluated. The samples used for each test are intended to be previously unstressed new samples but may be selected from previously used samples if so desired.

All-optical testing is carried out at one central wavelength only, this shall be either, 850 nm ± 30 nm. Source characteristics are S2, S3 and detector D1, as specified in IEC 61300-3-4. Launch conditions are in accordance with IEC 61300-1. The full set of tests is carried out for all fibre types for which compliance to BS EN 61753-022-2 is claimed. For different cable structures, only requalification to tests 4, 6, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14 is requested. Change in attenuation, for the purpose of the test, is defined as the peak-to-peak variation and is measured using IEC 61300-3-3. For monitoring intermittent discontinuities during a test, IEC 61300-3-28 are used. Using BS EN 61753-022-2 you can specify the minimum requirements and severities of a fibre optic connector terminated on multimode fibre.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 61753-022-2:2013 supersedes BS EN 61753-022-2:2003. BS EN 61753-022-2:2013 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 61753-022-2:2003:

  • Reconsideration of test requirements and details.
