What is BS EN 61202-1 - Fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components about?

BS EN 61202 is a series on fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components. Fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components is a fibre-optic telecommunications technology for delivering broadband network access to end customers. BS EN 61202-1 applies to isolators used in the field of fibre optics, all exhibiting the following features:

  • They are non-reciprocal optical devices, in which each port is either optical fibre or fibre optic connector
  • They are passive devices containing no optoelectronic or other transducing elements
  • They have two optical ports for directionally transmitting optical power

Who is BS EN 61202-1 - Fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components for?

BS EN 61202-1 on fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components is useful for:

  • Telecommunication component manufacturers
  • Telecommunication component manufacturers
  • Design engineers
  • Quality control personnel

Why should you use BS EN 61202-1 - Fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components

Fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components architecture implement a point-to-multipoint topology in which a single optical fibre serves multiple endpoints by using unpowered (passive) fibre optic splitters to divide the fibre bandwidth among the endpoints. BS EN 61202-1 describes Fibre optic isolators which are classified into type, style, variant, environmental category, and normative reference extensions.

BS EN 61202-1 contain a series of tests and measurements (which may or may not be grouped into a specified schedule depending on the requirements of that standard) with clearly defined conditions, severities, and pass/fail criteria. The tests are intended to be run on a “once-off” basis to prove any product’s ability to satisfy the “performance standards” requirement. Each performance standard has a different set of tests and/or severities (and/or groupings) and represents the requirements of a market sector, user group or system location.

BS EN 61202-1 is part of a two-level IEC specification system. The test and measurement procedures for optical, mechanical, climatic, and environmental characteristics of isolators to be used are defined and selected preferentially from BS EN 61202-1. The size measurement method to be used are specified in BS EN 61202-1 for dimensions that are specified within a total tolerance zone of 0,01 mm or less. Using BS EN 61202-1 you can understand isolators used in the field of fibre optics.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 61202-1:2017 supersedes BS EN 61202-1:2009. BS EN 61202-1:2017 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 61202-1:2009. These include:

  • The terms and definitions were reconsidered
  • Quality assessment level was deleted from classification
  • The clause numbers of annexes a and b have been rearranged
