What is BS EN 61314-1 - Fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components about?

BS EN 61314 is a series on fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components. Fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components do not require electrical-to-optical or optical-to-electrical conversion during their operation. BS EN 61314-1 specifies requirements for fan-outs used in the fibre optics field to provide a safe transition from multifibre cable units to individual fibres or cables. BS EN 61314-1 corresponds to QC880000 of the IEC Quality Assessment System.

Note: BS EN 61314-1 does not cover test and measurement procedures, which are described in IEC 61300 series.

Who is BS EN 61314-1 - Fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components for?

BS EN 61314-1 on fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components is useful for:

  • Telecommunication component manufacturers
  • Telecommunication equipment manufacturers
  • Design engineers
  • Quality control personnel

Why should you use BS EN 61314-1 - Fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components

Fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components are widely used by people as a promising solution for modern access to telecommunication networks. BS EN 61314-1 covers the requirements for fibre optic fan-outs. Fibre optic fan-outs are classified by style, arrangement, and variant. Some optical fibre splice configurations require special qualification provisions which shall not be imposed universally.

This accommodates individual component design configurations, specialised field tooling or specific application processes. In this case, requirements are necessary to assure repeatable performance or adequate safety and provide additional guidance for complete product specifications. These extensions are mandatory when used to prepare, assemble, or install an optical fibre splice either for field application usage or preparation of qualification test specimens. BS EN 61314-1 clarifies all stipulations. However, design and style-dependent extensions shall not be imposed universally. Using BS EN 61314-1 you can specify requirements for fan-outs used in the fibre optics field to provide a safe transition from multifibre cable units to individual fibres or cables.
