What is BS EN 492 - Fibre-cement slates and fittings about?

BS EN 492 is the European standard on the roof covering products for discontinuous laying and products for wall cladding.

BS EN 492 specifies the technical requirements and establishes methods of control and test as well as acceptance conditions for fibre-cement slates and their fibre-cement fittings for one or more of the following uses:

  • Roofing
  • Internal wall finishes
  • External wall and ceiling finishes.

BS EN 492 applies to fibre-cement slates with a height dimension not exceeding 850 mm for overlapping assembly. For the purpose of BS EN 492, fibre-cement slates have been classified according to their bending moment.

NOTE 1: BS EN 492 covers fibre-cement slates reinforced with fibres of different types.

NOTE 2: BS EN 492 does not include calculations with regard to works, design requirements, installation techniques, wind uplift or rain proofing of the installed products.

Who is BS EN 492 - Fibre-cement slates and fittings for?

BS EN 492 on fibre-cement slates and fittings is useful for:

  • Builders
  • Architects
  • Manufacturers of products in fibre-reinforced cement
  • Manufacturers of roofing slates

Why should you use BS EN 492 - Fibre-cement slates and fittings

Fibre-cement slates are manmade slates that are produced from fibre-cement and offer a lightweight, economical alternative to traditional natural roofing covering.

The product criteria for fibre-cement slates and fittings made by the chemical reaction of a siliceous and a calcareous material are outlined in BS EN 492.

BS EN 492 specify the nominal dimensions, shapes, sizes and configuration of edges of fibre-cement slates.

BS EN 492 provides the test methods to determine the physical requirements and characteristics for fibre-cement slates that include apparent density, mechanical characteristics and water impermeability.

Durability requirements and the external fire performance of the slates or fittings is mentioned in BS EN 492.

BS EN 492 helps you in maintaining an Assessment and verification of constancy of performance (AVCP) and factory production control (FPC) system to ensure that the fibre-cement slates and fittings are placed on the market comply with the declared performance of the essential characteristics.

BS EN 492 provides guidance on the marking, labelling and packaging of fibre-cement slates.

Overall, BS EN 492 could help you in designing and producing fibre-cement slates and fittings for commercial and industrial buildings ensuring durability, temperature stability, a long-life expectancy and weather resistance factor. In this manner, you can get manmade slates with high quality, low cost, versatility and attractive appearance.
