What is BS EN 494 – Specification for fibre-cement profiled sheets and fittings about?

BS EN 494 is the European standard on fibre cement which is the composite building and construction material, used mainly in roofing and facade products because of its strength and durability.

BS EN 494 specifies the technical requirements and establishes methods of control and test as well as acceptance conditions for fibre-cement profiled sheets and their fibre-cement fittings for one or more of the following uses:

  • Roofing
  • Internal wall finishes
  • External wall and ceiling finish.

For the purpose of BS EN 494, fibre-cement profiled sheets are classified according to their height of corrugation and their mechanical characteristics.

Note 1: BS EN 494 covers fibre-cement profiled sheets reinforced with fibres of a different type, with and without factory applied coating.

Note 2: BS EN 494 does not include calculations with regard to works, design requirements, installation techniques, wind uplift or rain proofing of the installed sheets.

Who is BS EN 494 - Specification for fibre-cement profiled sheets and fittings for?

BS EN 494 on fibre cement is useful for:

  • Builders
  • Architects
  • Civil engineers
  • Manufacturers of fibre-cement
  • Quality control personnel

Why should you use BS EN 494 - Specification for fibre-cement profiled sheets and fittings?

Fibre-cement profiled sheets and their fibre-cement fittings are designed to provide the weather-exposed surfaces on roofs and internal and external walls of buildings.

BS EN 494 navigates you through the product requirements for producing fibre-cement profiled sheets and fittings with the specification of dimensions and tolerances.

Physical and mechanical characteristics for fibre-cement profiled sheets are determined by BS EN 494.

BS EN 494 provides assessment and verification of constancy of performance (AVCP) with the compliance of fibre-cement profiled sheets and fittings with the requirements and the performances determination of the product type and factory production control.

The marking, labelling and packaging of fibre-cement sheets and fittings can be marked with BS EN 494.

Furthermore, BS EN 494 guides you in the production of high-quality fibre cement for commercial or industrial premises, allowing you to create strong and long-lasting construction materials that are physically suited for construction products such as cladding and roofing due to their function, performance, and commercial value, low cost, fire-resistance, water tightness, and lightweight.

As a result, fibre cement is one of the most energy-efficient and environmentally friendly materials on the market, using less energy in assembly and construction than all other wall materials.
