What is ISO 11438-6 – Ferronickel about? 

ISO 11438-6 is an international standard and a part of the ISO 11438 series that discusses the determination of thallium content for ferronickel. Ferronickel is primarily used in the manufacture of Austenitic stainless steels (known as 200 and 300 series). 

ISO 11438-6 specifies an electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometric method for the determination of thallium in the range of 0,3 g/t to 1,0 g/t in ferronickel, according to the principle of standard additions. The general requirements concerning the apparatus, sampling, dissolution of the test sample, procedure, calculation and test report are given in ISO 11438-1.

  • Trace metal contamination is minimized by avoidance of preliminary chemical extractions and additions of reagents 
  • Sample volumes are small (1 to 50 mu1) 
  • Atoms are released in higher concentrations 
  • Molecular recombination of atoms is retarded by the atmosphere of inert gas which restricts chemical reactions (e.g., oxidation) 
  • By programmed increments in temperature, electrothermal atomization permits organic constituents to be pyrolyzed before vaporization and atomization of metals.
