What is ISO 11438-8 – Ferronickel about?

ISO 11438-8 is an international standard and a part of the ISO 11438 series that discusses the determination of indium content for ferronickel. The ferronickel is used directly for making stainless steel and other ferrous alloys.

ISO 11438-8 specifies an electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometric method for the determination of indium in the range of 0,5 g/t to 2,5 g/t in ferronickel, according to the principle of standard additions. The general requirements concerning the apparatus, sampling, dissolution of the test sample, procedure, calculation and test report are given in ISO 11438-1.

Who is ISO 11438-8 – Ferronickel for?

ISO 11438-8 on the determination of indium content applies to:

  • Manufacturer of ferronickel components
  • Engineers

Why should you use ISO 11438-8 – Ferronickel?

The ferronickel is used directly for making stainless steel and other ferrous alloys. Indium content is higher in zinc ores with a high concentration of iron and stibium. Indium is distinguished for its high capture cross-section for thermal neutrons and so can be used in control rods in nuclear reactors.

ISO 11438-8 provides you with the measurement of the absorption of the resonance line energy from the spectrum of indium in the test solution at a wavelength of 325,6 nm by an atomic absorption spectrometer fitted with a graphite furnace electrothermal atomizer.

ISO 11438-8 provides you with the determination of indium content which includes:

  • Atomic absorption measurements
  • Semi-quantitative estimation of the indium content
  • Quantitative determination of the indium content
  • Plotting of standard additions
  • Number of determinations

Overall, ISO 11438-8 provides you with comprehensive guidance useful throughout the process of production.
