What is EN IEC 63093-7-Guidelines on dimensions and the limits of surface irregularities about?

BS EN IEC 63093 is an international standard that discusses ferrite cores. The main objective of the BS EN IEC 63093 series is to ensure ferrite cores meet the required quality and performance levels so as to effectively avoid electromagnetic interference

BS EN IEC 63093-7 is the seventh part of the series that specifies the dimensions that are of importance for mechanical interchangeability for a preferred range of EER-cores made of ferrite. The essential dimensions of coil formers to be used with them as well the effective parameter values to be used in calculations involving them and gives guidelines on allowable limits of surface irregularities applicable to EER-cores.

BS EN IEC 63093-7 is a specification useful in the negotiations between ferrite core manufacturers and customers about surface irregularities.

Who is BS EN IEC 63093-7-Guidelines on dimensions and the limits of surface irregularities for?

BS EN IEC 63093-7 on EER-cores is relevant to:

  • Ferrite core manufacturers
  • ERR-cores manufacturers and suppliers
  • Electrical components and magnetic circuit manufacturers
  • Transformer and inductor manufacturers
  • Mechanical engineers
  • Electrical engineers
  • Product design engineers

Why should you use BS EN IEC 63093-7-Guidelines on dimensions and the limits of surface irregularities

EER cores are an economical choice for transformers and inductors. The round center post offers the advantage of a shorter winding path length than the winding around a square center post of equal area.

BS EN IEC 63093-7 gives guidance on allowable limits of surface irregularities applicable to RM-cores in accordance with the relevant generic specification. BS EN IEC 63093-7 provides the best guidance and primary dimensions on EER-cores, parameters, pin locations, crystallites, and area with length reference for visual inspection.

BS EN IEC 63093-7 also helps identify surface defects in pot-cores, such as chips, cracks, ragged edges, pores and pull-out, which helps in mitigating overall application performance concerns. The limits of these surface irregularities are helpful to determine the extent of damage due to which product failure can occur.

Compliance with the best industry requirements on dimensions provided by BS EN IEC 63093-7 ensures mechanical interchangeability of complete assemblies and wound coil formers.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN IEC 63093-7:2018 supersedes BS EN 62317-7:2005, BS EN 60424-3:2016 which is withdrawn. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to IEC 62317-7:

  • IEC 63093-7 integrates IEC 62317-7 and IEC 60424-3
  • IEC 60424-3:2015, Table 2, has been included in Annex C
