What is ISO 32621 about?

The ISO 3262 multi-series discusses various types of extender pigments for paints. ISO 3262-1 introduces the concept of extender pigments and provides general test methods. ISO 32621 gives the definition for the term extender and specifies test methods that are required for most of the subsequent parts of ISO 3262.

Note: The subsequent parts of ISO 3262 specify requirements and the corresponding methods of test for extenders for use in paints, related coating materials and other applications.

Who is ISO 32621 for?

ISO 32621 on extenders is useful for:

  • Paint manufacturers
  • Painters
  • Paint and varnish retailers/suppliers
  • Real estate developers/builders
  • Quality control personnel
  • Research and development personnel

Why should you use ISO 32621?

An extender pigment is a naturally occurring chemical substance that is added to a paint or coating to improve its properties such as durability, cost, and resistance to corrosion or wear. ISO 32621 defines the term extender which gives you an idea of its applications. ISO 32621 informs you of test methods for colour comparison, determination of loss on ignition, and calcium and magnesium contents in extender pigments. These test methods are necessary to help determine values that would be required for test methods in subsequent parts of the ISO 3262 series.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN ISO 32621:2020 cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 32621:1997), which has been technically revised. The main changes compared to the previous edition are as follows:

  • The main title has been changed from “Extenders for paints” to “Extenders”
  • Clarification and focus on extenders for all/undefined applications
  • CAS numbers have been added to all reagents used
