What is BS EN IEC 62892-Thermal cycling of PV modules about?

BS EN IEC 62892 discusses extended thermal cycling of PV modules.

BS EN IEC 62892 defines a test sequence that extends the thermal cycling test of IEC 61215-2. It is intended to differentiate PV modules with improved durability to thermal cycling and evaluate modules for deployment in locations most susceptible to thermal cycling type stress.

BS EN IEC 62892 is based on the ability for 95 % of the modules represented by the samples submitted for this test to pass an equivalency of 500 thermal cycles, as defined in IEC 61215-2:2016,4.11.3, with a maximum power degradation of less than 5 %. Provisions are also provided to reduce overall test time by increasing the maximum cycle temperature and/or the number of modules submitted for the test.

The main objective of BS EN IEC 62892 is to ensure long service-life and efficiency of PV modules amidst fluctuating extreme temperatures.

Who is BS EN IEC 62892- Thermal cycling of PV modules for?

BS EN IEC 62892 on extended thermal cycling of PV modules is relevant to:

  • Solar energy engineering
  • Solar photovoltaic energy systems
  • Manufacturers of solar cells and solar panels
  • Manufacturers of solar-based electrical devices
  • PV power stations

Why should you use BS EN IEC 62892- Thermal cycling of PV modules?

The IEC 61215 series defines test requirements for the design qualification of flat-plate PV modules for long-term operation in general open-air climates. IEC TS 62941 provides technical guidance in the application of type-approval testing.

The test procedure in BS EN IEC 62892 was developed based on analysis of the stress on tin-lead solder bonds on crystalline silicon solar cells in a glass superstrate type package. While changes in lead-free solder have an effect on the acceleration factors, they are not enough to alter the overall findings of this test.

BS EN IEC 62892 helps you improve the performance and durability of PV modules, by enhancing it resistance to material fatigue and temperature stresses.  You can thus prevent product failure arising from poor soldering, cracking, and delamination. With energy efficient systems, your solar power engineering projects can be optimized.
