What is BS EN 62226-1- Human body exposure to electric or magnetic fields about?

BS EN 62226-1 is an international standard that discusses the methods for calculating the current density and internal electric field induced in the human body.

BS EN 62226-1 provides means for demonstrating compliance with the basic restrictions on human exposure to low and intermediate frequency electric and magnetic fields specified in exposure standards or guidelines such as those produced by IEEE and ICNIRP.

BS EN 62226-1 provides means for demonstrating compliance with the basic restrictions without having to go to the sophisticated models. Nevertheless, when the exposure conditions are well characterized  and when results from such models are available, they are good to be used for demonstrating compliance with EMF standards or guidelines.

Note 1: BS EN 62226-1 does not aim at replacing the definitions and procedures specified in exposure standards or guidelines, such as those produced by IEEE or ICNIRP, but aims at providing additional procedures with a view to allowing compliance assessment with these Standards.

Note 2: References to the scientific literature are given in the bibliography.

Who is BS EN 62226-1- Human body exposure to electric or magnetic fields  for?

BS EN 62226-1 on human body exposure to electric or magnetic fields is relevant to:

  • Safety precautions regulatory authorities
  • Electrical / electronic engineers
  • Safety authorities for electric field/ magnetic field
  • Electromagnetic engineers
  • EMF testing authorities
  • Entities dealing with the high electric and magnetic fields

Why should you use BS EN 62226-1- Electric or magnetic fields in the low and intermediate frequency range?

Whenever any conducting material gets exposed to electric fields or magnetic fields it gets induced in the material and influences the distribution of electric charges at the surface. The human body is a good conductor of electricity, and these effects can also cause the current to flow through the body. Low-frequency magnetic fields can also cause circulating currents to induce within the human body. Thus, it is necessary to set precautionary measures for human body exposure to electric or magnetic fields.

BS EN 62226-1 serves the purpose to propose a more realistic approach to the modelling of human exposure to low frequency electric and magnetic fields, using a set of models of growing complexity for the field emission source, the human body, or both. It helps the users to propose standardized values for the electrical parameters of organs in the human body- electrical conductivity and permittivity and their variation with the frequency.

BS EN 62226-1 discusses the factors on which current induced in the human body depends on an electric or magnetic field.

Overall, BS EN 62226-1 sets an approach for human body exposure to electric and magnetic field and recommends precautionary measures to the users.
