What is BS EN 60079-25:2022 about?
Protective measures reduce the likelihood that electrical equipment will ignite explosions in atmospheres where flammable gases, vapours, mists or dust are dangerously concentrated. BS EN 60079-25:2022 is Part 25 in a series of European standards that details such protective measures, in this case for electrical systems that are intrinsically safe, i.e. incapable of causing an explosion due to insufficient energy levels.
Who is BS EN 60079-25:2022 for?
System designers, who can be manufacturers, specialist consultants or a member of the end-user’s staff. End-users will typically be:
- Underground mines
- Oil and gas production and processing plants, onshore and offshore platforms and FPSO (Floating Production Storage Offloading vessels)
- Oil and gas tankers and drilling ships
- Oil refineries
- Petrochemical and chemical processing plants
- Gas pipelines and distribution centres
- Re-fuelling stations or petrol stations
- Surface coating industries
- Sewerage treatment plants
Why should you use BS EN 60079-25:2022?
The 60079 series examines a wide range of factors for component usage in hazardous areas and defines different hazardous area classifications.
BS EN 60079-25:2022 forms an integral part of the series by providing specific requirements for the design, construction and assessment of intrinsically safe electrical systems, type of protection “i”, intended for use, as a whole or in part, in locations in which the use of Group I, II or III apparatus is required.
This standard supplements and modifies the general requirements of BS EN 60079-0 and the intrinsic safety standard BS EN 60079-11. Where a requirement of this standard conflicts with a requirement of BS EN 60079-0 or BS EN 60079-11, the requirement of this standard takes precedence. The installation requirements of Group II or Group III systems designed in accordance with this standard are specified in BS EN 60079-14.
NOTE: Group I installation requirements are presently not provided in BS EN 60079-14.
BS EN 60079-25:2022 contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goal 9 on industry, innovation and infrastructure and Goal 12 on responsible consumption and production because it supports safe, resilient and responsible infrastructure.
What’s new about BS EN 60079-25:2022?
This standard replaces BS EN 60079-25:2010. BS EN 60079-25:2022 has been revised and updated to reflect changes in technology and industry practice.
