What is BS EN 11271 - Explosive atmospheres about?

BS EN 11271 is an international standard that includes various safety aspects for explosive atmosphere.

BS EN 11271 specifies methods for the identification and assessment of hazardous situations leading to explosion and the design and construction measures appropriate for the required safety. This is achieved by risk assessment and risk reduction

BS EN 11271 is applicable to any equipment, protective systems, and components intended to be used in potentially explosive atmospheres, under atmospheric conditions. These atmospheres can arise from flammable/combustible substances processed, used, or released by the equipment, protective systems, and components or from materials in the vicinity of the equipment, protective systems, and components and/or from the materials of construction of the equipment, protective systems, and components.

BS EN 11271 is applicable to equipment, protective systems, and components at all stages of its use. It is only applicable to equipment group II which is intended for use in other places than underground parts of mines and those parts of surface installations of such mines endangered by firedamp and/or combustible dust.

Note 1: The preventive and protective measures described in BS EN 11271 will not provide the required level of safety unless the equipment, protective systems, and components are operated within their intended use and are installed and maintained according to the relevant codes of practice or requirements.

Note 2: BS EN 11271 is not applicable to medical devices intended for use in a medical environment, equipment, protective systems, and components where the explosion hazard results exclusively from the presence of explosive substances or unstable chemical substances.

Who is BS EN 11271 - Explosive atmospheres for?

BS EN 11271 on explosive atmospheres is useful for all the entities dealing with:

  • Underground mine authorities
  • Oil and petroleum gas industries
  • Designers of electrical equipment in an explosive atmosphere
  • Manufacturers of safety equipment in an explosive atmosphere

Why should you use BS EN 11271 - Explosive atmospheres?

The safety of equipment, protective systems, and components can be achieved by eliminating hazards and/or limiting the risk.

BS EN 11271 specifies the general design and construction methods to help designers and manufacturers in achieving explosion safety in the design of equipment, protective systems, and components. It helps you in the identification of explosion hazards and specifies the determination of the likelihood of occurrence of a hazardous explosive atmosphere.

BS EN 11271 helps its users for risk assessment of risk and reduces the risks by providing them with the appropriate design (without using safeguarding), safeguarding, information for use, any other preventive measures.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 11271:2019 supersedes BS EN 11271:2011, which is withdrawn. BS EN 11271:2019 includes the following changes:

  • New terms and definitions were added, and examples about electric spark generation have been added, new assessment for ultrasound
  • Information from EN IEC 60079-0 have been incorporated, different safety limits for ultrasound have been incorporated, new standards for protective systems have been incorporated
  • Information on the tightness of equipment has been rewritten, Annex C “Verification procedure for the threshold limit of ultrasound in liquids” has been added
