What is BS EN 60079-0: 2009?

BS EN 60079-0 sets out the general electrical safety requirements for the construction, testing and marking of electrical equipment and components that are used in explosive atmospheres. Explosive or flammable atmospheres can be defined as temperatures of -20 °C to +60 °C; pressure of 80 kPa (0,8 bar) to 110 kPa (1,1 bar); and air with normal oxygen content, typically 21 % v/v. This standard also covers classification systems and can be used during type, impact, thermal, environmental and mechanical testing.

How does it work?

BS EN 60079-0 looks at protected electrical equipment, the effect of temperature and gives clear guidelines relating to grades. It also includes safety principles for electric enclosures, fasteners and circuits. This standard covers various aspects of electrical testing, test equipment and testing conditions. It also provides supplementary requirements for rotating electrical machines, switchgear, fuse-links, electric plugs, sockets and luminaires.

Who should buy it?

  • Electrical engineers
  • Mechanical engineers
  • Regulatory bodies
  • Organizations supplying electrical equipment in explosive atmospheres
  • Organizations testing electrical equipment in explosive atmospheres
