What is BS EN 10904 about?

BS EN 1090 is a series of European standards on steel and aluminium structures that discusses the technical requirements of the structures. BS EN 10904 is the fourth part of a series of documents on steel structures and aluminium structures. BS EN 10904 specifies requirements for the execution, i.e. the manufacture and the installation, of cold-formed structural steel members and sheeting and cold-formed structures for the roof, ceiling, floor, wall and cladding applications.

BS EN 10904 may be used for structures designed according to other design rules provided that conditions for execution comply with them and any necessary additional requirements are specified. BS EN 10904 also specifies requirements for the execution i.e. the manufacture and the installation of structures made from cold-formed profiled sheeting for roof, ceiling, floor and wall applications under predominately static loading or seismic loading conditions and their documentation. BS EN 10904 also covers spacer constructions between the outer and inner or upper and lower skins for roofs, walls and ceilings made from cold-formed profiled sheeting and the connections and attachments of the aforementioned elements as long as all are involved in load transfer.

BS EN 10904 covers steel profiled sheeting for composite floors, e.g. during installation and in the stage of pouring concrete. Composite structural members where the interaction between dissimilar materials are an integral part of the structural behaviour such as sandwich panels and composite floors are not covered by this standard.

NOTE 1: BS EN 10904 does not cover the necessary analyses and detailing and execution rules for thermal insulation, moisture protection, noise control and fire protection.

NOTE 2: BS EN 10904 does not cover regulations of roof cladding and wall cladding, produced by traditional plumber methods or tinsmith methods.

Who is BS EN 10904 for?

BS EN 10904 on steel structures and aluminium structures is relevant to:

  • Structural engineers
  • Civil engineer
  • Welders

Why should you use BS EN 10904?

A steel structure is a metal structure that is made of structural steel. Structural steel is very stiff in respect to its cross-sectional area and thus can support a high load without excessive sagging.

BS EN 10904 provides you with the best guidance on requirements that should be taken into account for the execution of structural steelwork for roof, ceiling, floor, wall and cladding applications. This includes structures and manufactured components produced from hot rolled, structural steels; cold-formed components and sheeting; hot-finished and cold-formed structural hollow sections, welding, mechanical fastening, erection, inspection, testing and correction.

As a user of BS EN 10904, you can ensure adequate levels of mechanical resistance and stability, serviceability and durability of structures of the roof, ceiling, floor, wall and cladding applications. BS EN 10904 assist you in manufacturing and installing structural steel. BS EN 10904 is helpful for the welders working on structural steelwork. Inspection, testing and correction methods provided by BS EN 10904 helps the user in maintaining the quality of the product. BS EN 10904 helps you in prolonging the service life of roof, ceiling, floor, wall and cladding structures
