What is BS EN 14199 - Execution of micropiles about?  

Micro-piles are sand and cement mortar piles that are strengthened along their length to serve as deep foundations and highly tensioned stress throughout the shaft. BS EN 14199 is a European standard that covers the execution of special geotechnical work, enabling safety, performance, and efficient operations in geotechnical applications.  

BS EN 14199 establishes general principles for the execution of micropiles. 

Micropiles are for drilled piles constructed using a drilling tool with a diameter less than 300 mm. 

The provisions of BS EN 14199 apply to: 

  • Single micropiles 
  • Micropile groups 
  • Reticulated micropiles 
  • Micropile walls 

The material of micropiles covered by BS EN 14199 can be: 

  • Steel or other reinforcement materials 
  • Grout, mortar, or concrete 
  • A combination of above 

Note 1: BS EN 14199 is not applicable to driven piles, the execution of which is governed by EN 12699

Note 2: Deep mixing columns according to EN 14679 are not included in BS EN 14199.  

Note 3: Columns constructed by jet grouting are covered by EN 12716. Ground anchors are covered by EN 1537.

Why should you use BS EN 14199 - Execution of micropiles?  

Micropiles can transmit loads to competent bearing strata in liquefiable profiles to meet seismic design criteria. BS EN 14199 provides information needed for the execution of micropiles, geotechnical investigation, specific requirements, materials and products. Laboratory and field tests are undertaken to verify mixture, mixture efficiency, setting time, and performance of the grout.  

Additions and admixtures, materials for grout, mortar and concrete, spacers, centralizers, and other components have been described in detail in BS EN 14199. Special requirements for micro piles and grout preparation are discussed in BS EN 14199 enabling users to comply with material and product requirements given in the European standards. 

The adoption of BS EN 14199 allows users to standardize the design aspects of micro piles, enabling the efficient execution of special geotechnical work and minimization of backfill and disruptions.   

What’s changed since the last update?  

BS EN 14199:2015 supersedes BS EN 14199:2005 which is withdrawn. BS EN 14199:2015 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 14199:2005. These include:  

  • Driven piles are excluded from EN 14199 and transferred to EN 12699 
  • Sections describing concrete and testing have been minimized 
  • EN 14199:2015 has been harmonized with EN 153
