What is BS EN 1998-1:2004?

BS EN 1998-1:2004 relates to the structural design of buildings, structures and civil engineering works in seismic regions. The standard looks at the basic performance requirements and compliance criteria that apply to these structural systems, as well as the rules for the representation of seismic actions. It also covers other aspects of design and safety measures for the base isolation of buildings, and sets the benchmark for structural materials, such as concrete, steel, composite steel-concrete, timber and masonry.

How does it work?

BS EN 1998-1:2004 shares best practice rules to improve hazard prevention in buildings in earthquake zones. It first looks at the performance requirements and compliance criteria of these structures – defining design, foundations and a quality system plan. The standard then explains ground conditions, including subsoil, before looking at the characteristics of earthquake-resistant buildings. Other topics include the design concepts for various types of buildings and base isolation.

Who should buy it?

  • Civil engineers
  • Construction engineers
  • Construction designers
  • Architects

What’s new?

BS EN 1998-1:2004 replaces DD ENV 1998-1-1:1996, DD ENV 1998-1-2:1996, DD ENV 1998-1-3:1996 which now are withdrawn.
