What is BS EN 15491 about?  

BS EN 15491 discusses about Ethanol as a blending component for petrol. BS EN 15491 specifies a method for determining the total acidity, calculated as acetic acid, of ethanol to be used in petrol blends. It is applicable to ethanol having total acid contents of between 0,003 % (m/m) and 0,015 % (m/m).  

NOTE: For the purposes of this document, the terms “% (m/m)” and “% (V/V)” are used to represent the mass fraction and the volume fraction, respectively.

Why should you use BS EN 15491 

Engine corrosion is accelerated by excessive acidity in alcohol-based fuels. The acidity and the presence of inorganic species (e.g., Cl-, Cu2+, Fe3+, and SO42−), combined with free oxygen are responsible for the induction of the main corrosive processes caused by fuel ethanol. Considering the corrosion potential, government agencies have established concentration limits for corrosive chemical species in fuel ethanol. To control acidity, samples are generally analyzed by volumetric titration.  

BS EN 15491 provides method of determination of total acidity by titration method which will help the petroleum companie to maintain the quality of their product and monitor the corrosion potential.

What’s changed since the last update?   

BS EN 15491:2021 supersedes BS EN 15491:2007, which is withdrawn.   

In BS EN 15491:2021 comparison with the BS EN 15491:2007, the following technical modification has been made:  

  • The purging step (8.4) has been made mandatory for clarification to the user and for better comparison of the results. This has no effect on the method precision
