What is ISO/TR 9241-312 about?

Electrophoretic e-paper displays (EPD) has widespread use as electronic reading devices. Electrophoretic technology has led to the development of reflective e-paper displays (EPD) that have different optical characteristics compared to emissive display devices, such as backlit liquid crystal displays (LCD) or organic light emitting diode displays (OLED).

ISO/TR 9241-312 provides an overview of research on readability of electrophoretic displays. It also provides information for evaluating readability of electrophoretic displays and defining the context of their use.

ISO/TR 9241-312 explains the following 7 evaluations and results related to readability of EPD:

  • Readability evaluation for EPD under 14 levels of illumination conditions
  • Proposing a baseline setup for readability using VAS evaluation
  • Verification of the minimum illuminance for readability of an EPD
  • Contribution of character sizes to the readability of mobile devices
  • Difference in readability of the contrast ratio of mobile devices
  • The effects of long-term reading on visual functions and subjective symptoms
  • Evaluation of readability for tablet devices by the severity of cataract cloudiness

Who is ISO/TR 9241-312 for?

ISO/TR 9241-312  on electrophoretic displays is useful for:

  • Manufacturers of e-paper display
  • Printing industries
  • Research and development team
  • Industry that applying EPD technology

Why should you use ISO/TR 9241-312

E-paper displays are used in reading devices, also known as e-readers. Displays using Electric Paper Display (EPD) devices that has different optical characteristic from other display devices, such as liquid crystal displays(LCD) or organic light emitted display(OLED), are getting popular for reading devices.

ISO/TR 9241-312 explores results of recent studies about human interaction between those devices and various readers. The goal of this document is going to expose unique aspects of using electronic paper display (EPD) especially for a human action of reading.

The human action of reading is basically analyzed by two subjective attributes, that is, legibility and readability. ISO/TR 9241-312 provides the readability of EPD from viewing point of a human action of reading which required a lot of human ergonomics tests and sophisticated statistical works for around a hundred human subjects with comparing among printed papers, EPDs, and emissive displays (LCD).

ISO/TR 9241-312 provides guidance on image quality and environmental lighting conditions for reading to facilitate international trade and enhance user value in the field of EPD.

ISO/TR 9241-312 helps users for EPD with the comfortable or easy reading and the eye-safe properties for reading comparing with traditional printed paper media.
