What is BS EN 16798-13 - Calculation of cooling systems about?

BS EN 16798-13 is the thirteenth part of the multi-series standard that covers the calculation of the operational parameters and the energy consumption of cooling generation systems. The cooling generation consists of:

  • Cooling generators like compression and absorption chillers
  • Other(generic) generator types such as ground or surface water or direct use of ground heat from boreholes
  • Different types of heat rejection (dry, wet, hybrid with outdoor air, other sink types)

The methods cover:

  • The possibility of heat recovery of heat to be rejected for the use of heating and/or domestic hot water production, using an interface to the M3-1 standard
  • A multi generator calculation.

Note-

BS EN 16798-13 does not cover the cooling emission, distribution, and storage systems.

Who is BS EN 16798-13 - Calculation of cooling systems for?

BS EN 16798-13 on the calculation of cooling systems is useful for:

  • Construction industry
  • Civil Engineers
  • Manufacturers of cooling system
  • Installers of cooling systems
  • Programmers of EPB standards
  • Regulatory authorities

Why should you use BS EN 16798-13 - Calculation of cooling systems?

BS EN 16798-13 aims at international harmonization of the methodology

for the assessment of the energy performance of buildings, called “set of EPB standards”. All EPB standards follow specific rules useful for engineers, regulators, and programmers to ensure overall consistency, unambiguity, and transparency.

BS EN 16798-13 provides all EPB standards certain flexibility about the methods, the required input data, and references to other EPB standards, with informative default choices.

BS EN 16798-13 involves module structure (M4-8) that sets out EPB standards to help the installer to identify the position of the module (M4-8) by calculating the electrical energy of compression type systems(cooling energy)  and the heat of absorption type systems by thermal energy (e.g., power of heat rejection system (distribution and ventilation), control, sensors, and actors).

What changed since the last update?

EN 16798‑13:2017 together with BS EN 16798‑9:2017 and PD CEN/TR 16798‑14:2017, it supersedes BS EN 15243:2007, which is withdrawn.
