What is BS EN 15316-2-Energy performance of buildings about?

BS EN 15316 discusses the energy performance of buildings. BS EN 15316-2 is the second part of BS EN 15316 multi-series and discusses space emission systems (heating and cooling).

BS EN 15316-2 is to standardize the required inputs, the outputs, and the links (structure) of the calculation method in order to achieve a common European calculation method.

BS EN 15316-2 covers energy performance calculation of heating systems and water-based cooling space emission sub-systems.

Note 1: The modules represent EPB standards, although one EPB standard may cover more than one module and one module may be covered by more than one EPB standard, for instance, a simplified and a detailed method respectively.

Who is BS EN 15316-2-Energy performance of buildings for?

BS EN 15316-2 on the energy performance of buildings (space emission systems (heating and cooling)) is useful for:

  • Architects
  • Heater manufacturers
  • Civil engineers
  • Design engineers
  • HVAC (Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) engineers
  • Builders

Why should you use BS EN 15316-2-Energy performance of buildings

The energy efficiency of a building is the extent to which the energy consumption per square meter of the floor area of the building measures up to established energy consumption benchmarks for that particular type of building under defined climatic conditions.

BS EN 15316-2 is part of a series of standards aiming at international harmonization of the methodology for the assessment of the energy performance of buildings, called the “set of EPB standards. BS EN 15316-2 provides you with the methods for calculation of energy losses/requirements of space heating and cooling systems, space cooling systems, and domestic hot water systems in buildings.

BS EN 15316-2 provides the structure for calculation of the additional heat and cooling losses and energy requirements of heat and cooling emission systems for meeting the building net energy demand. The calculation method in BS EN 15316-2 helps in the optimization of the energy performance of a planned heat emission system or cooling system, by applying the method to several possible options.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 15316-2:2017 supersedes BS EN 15316-2-1:2007, which is withdrawn. BS EN 15316-2:2017 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 15316-2-1:2007. These include:

  • Only one calculation method for heating and cooling emission systems
  • The calculation method is only based on temperature differences (the calculation method based on efficiency values are no longer exist in the new standard)
  • The new calculation method defines input parameters from product standards
  • The new standard includes consistent default values for the control devices
