What is BS EN 15459-1 Energy performance of buildings about?

BS EN 15459 discusses the energy performance of buildings. BS EN 15459-1 is the first part of BS EN 15459 and discusses the economic evaluation procedures for energy systems in buildings. BS EN 15459-1 provides a calculation method for the economic issues of heating systems and other systems that are involved in the energy demand and consumption of the building. It applies to all types of new and existing buildings.

BS EN 15459-1 covers the definitions and the structure of the types of costs that should be considered for the calculation of the economic efficiency of saving options in buildings, data needed for the definition of costs related to systems under consideration, the calculation method(s) and expression of the result of the economic study.

Who is BS EN 15459-1 Energy performance of buildings for?

BS EN 15459-1 on the energy performance of buildings (economic evaluation procedure for energy systems in buildings) is useful for:

  • Architects
  • Heater manufacturers
  • Solar water heater manufacturers
  • Civil engineers
  • Design engineers
  • HVAC (Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) engineers
  • Builders
  • Plumbers
  • Constructors/contractors who install plumbing systems

Why should you use BS EN 15459-1-Energy performance of buildings?

BS EN 15459-1 is part of the method for calculation of economic performance of energy-saving options in buildings (e.g., insulation, better performing generators, and distribution systems, efficient lighting, renewable sources, combined heat, and power). BS EN 15459-1 gives a method for the economic calculation of the building envelope and other building-related systems covered by the EPB standards.

The methods in BS EN 15459-1 helps you in the following applications:

  • Considering the economic feasibility of energy-saving options in buildings
  • Comparing different solutions of energy-saving options in buildings (plant types, fuels…)
  • Evaluating the economic performance of an overall design of the building (for example, trade-off energy demand and energy efficiency of heating systems)
  • Assessing the effect of possible energy conservation measures on an existing heating system, economic calculation of the cost of energy use with and without the energy conservation measure

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 15459-1:2017 supersedes BS EN 15459:2007, which is withdrawn. BS EN 15459-1:2017 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 15459:2007. These include:

  • Addition of the payback period and the addition of costs due to the end of life of the building
  • Update based on the evolution of the annual costs over a specific time period
  • Informative content is removed to the accompanying Technical Report CEN/TR 15459-2
