What is BS EN 15500-1 - Electronic individual zone control equipment for heating, ventilating, and air conditioning about?

The purpose of BS EN 15500-1 is to specify the applications, functionality set and application performance for electronic individual zone control equipment.

The applications are for cooling and hot water or electrical heating. BS EN 15500-1 applies specifically to individual zone control equipment for maintaining temperature, humidity, and airflow as a function of occupancy and demand operated with auxiliary electrical energy.

Information required for the operation of the equipment may be processed using either analog or digital techniques or a combination of both. Safety requirements remain unaffected by BS EN 15500-1.

Who is BS EN 15500-1 - Electronic individual zone control equipment for heating, ventilating, and air conditioning for?

BS EN 15500-1 on electronic individual zone control equipment for heating, ventilating, and air conditioning is useful for:

  • Civil Engineers
  • Manufacturers of heating and air conditioning
  • Installers of heating, ventilating and air conditioning
  • Building contractors
  • Environmental regulatory authorities

Why should you use BS EN 15500-1 - Electronic individual zone control equipment for heating, ventilating, and air conditioning

The objective of electronic individual zone control equipment is to save energy and contribute to acceptable levels of hygiene, health, and comfort, by performing the following primary functions:

  • Control the zone variables by influencing the energy supply (e.g., Hot/chilled fluid, electrical energy, air volume, etc.) Called also energy carrier
  • The izc application covered by this standard will be presented in accordance with the energy carrier used
  • Minimize the energy supplied to the zone (e.g., Operating modes: comfort, pre comfort, economy, frost/building protection)
  • Minimize running cost according to the price of energy

BS EN 15500-1 describes the functions which the controller can be capable of carrying out, and if they have any significant benefit on energy savings, air quality, comfort and hygiene/health.

Electrical direct heating systems are today the most used systems for direct heating systems. Direct heating is defined as the combined generation and emission of heat. The heat source can be electric, gas, oil, or other fuel sources. The heat emitter can be a panel radiator, convector, under-floor or ceiling heating. BS EN 15500-1 gives you guidance on direct heating systems.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 15500-1 supersedes EN 15500:2008

The most important changes are:

  • Respect the presentation of this project in the frame EPB in accordance with the drafting rules
  • Non-normative content is in CEN/TR 155002:2016
  • Function blocks and block diagrams (informative) removed
  • Individual zone control applications: new structured and clearly arranged
