What is ISO 50004 about?
ISO 50004 guides users with different levels of energy management, energy consumption, and EnMS experience.
ISO 50004 gives practical guidelines and examples for establishing, implementing, maintaining, and improving an energy management system (EnMS) by the systematic approach of ISO 50001:2018. The guidance in this document applies to any organization.
Note: ISO 50004 does not guide how to develop an integrated management system.

Why should you use ISO 50004?
Energy Management System (EMS) is a collection of computerized tools used to monitor, control, and optimize the performance of generation and transmission systems.
ISO 50004 provides complete information and guidelines for maintaining and improving ISO50001's energy management system.
A key benefit of ISO 50004 is providing Planning Actions to address risks and opportunities for Energy targets and being able to plan to achieve them. It also includes Energy review, Energy performance indicators, Energy baseline, and planning for gathering meaningful data on energy use.
Overall, ISO 50004 provides methods for planning operational control and analysing the energy use and consumption within an organization. This has the benefit of giving the organization a better understanding of the types of energy they use and consume.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS ISO 50004:2020 supersedes BS ISO 50004:2004. BS ISO 50004:2020 includes some technical changes concerning BS ISO 50004:2004. These include:
- ISO 50004 has been restructured as per the high-level structure (HLS) for management system standards (MSS), which helps to ensure a high level of compatibility with other MSS, including the addition of context of the organization and risk[12]
- Details on the energy data collection plan and related requirements have been added (previously the energy measurement plan);
- The API and EnB text has been clarified to provide a better understanding of these concepts;
- The format has been modified to remove the practical help boxes and integrate the information within the text
