What is BS EN 61970-453 - Energy management system application program interface about?

BS EN 61970 is a series on Energy management system application program interface (EMS-API). Energy management system application program interface is a system of computer-aided tools used by operators of electric utilitygrids to monitor, control, and optimize the performance of the generation or transmission system. BS EN 61970-453 defines at an abstract level, the content and exchange mechanisms used for data transmitted between control centre components.

Included in BS EN 61970-453 are the general use cases for the exchange of diagram layout data, and guidelines for linking the layout definitions with CIM data. Guidelines for the management of schematic definitions through multiple revisions are also included.

Who is BS EN 61970-453 - Energy management system application program interface for?

BS EN 61970-453 on Energy management system application program interface (EMS-API) is applicable to:

  • Computer-based industries
  • Wireless network sectors
  • Internet providers
  • Sectors implementing microprocessor systems

Why should you use BS EN 61970-453 - Energy management system application program interface?

Energy management system application program interface can also refer to a system designed to achieve energy efficiency through process optimization by reporting on granular energy use by individual pieces of equipment. BS EN 61970-453 implementations define an application program interface (API 1)) for an Energy Management System (EMS 2)). BS EN 61970-453 ensures the functional requirements for interfaces that a component (or application) shall implement to exchange information with other components (or applications) and/or to access publicly available data in a standard way.

Energy management system application program interfaces employ a variety of schematic and quasi-geographic presentations in their user interfaces. These are sometimes generated automatically, but more often are hand-drawn and require considerable labour to create and maintain. Most of this labour goes into the arrangement or ‘layout’ of the power system elements within the overall diagram. Using BS EN 61970-453 you can define at an abstract level, the content and exchange mechanisms used for data transmitted between control centre components.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 61970-453:2014+A1:2019 supersedes BS EN 61970-453:2014. BS EN 61970-453:2014+A1:2019 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 61970-453:2014. These include:

  • The SVG elements and its data model have been replaced by the Diagram Layout Package
  • The exchange is in accordance with and is a part of the IEC 61970 profile concept
  • A glue point object has been introduced to model explicit connections between graphics elements
