What is BS EN IEC 61020-1- Electromechanical switches about?

BS EN IEC 61020-1 is the first part of an international standard used for electromechanical switches that specifies the test method and test procedures which helps in manufacturing good quality electromagnetic switches. Using BS EN IEC 61020-1 you can ensure the safety of electronic equipment.

BS EN IEC 61020-1 specifies the terminology, symbols, test methods and other necessary information to provide consistency in detail specifications for electromechanical switches.

BS EN IEC 61020-1 relates to electromechanical switches intended for use in electrical and electronic appliances. Switches covered by this document:

  • Are devices that open, close, or change the connection of a circuit by the mechanical motion of conducting parts (contacts)
  • Have a maximum rated voltage of 480 V
  • Have a maximum rated current of 63 A

Note 1: BS EN IEC 61020-1 does not include keyboards and keypads which are intended for use in information-handling systems. Electromechanical key switches can be included under the scope of this document.

Note 2: Switch families will be described in any detail specifications that reference this document.

Note 3: BS EN IEC 61020-1 is a performance standard intended to describe evaluation methods to better clarify the capabilities of a switch.

Note 4: Safety requirements for switches for households and similar fixed electrical installations are given in IEC 60669 (all parts).

Note 5: Safety requirements for appliance switches are given in IEC 61058 (all parts).

Who is BS EN IEC 61020-1- Electromechanical switches for?

BS EN IEC 61020-1 on electromechanical switches is beneficial for:

  • Manufacturers of electronic devices
  • Electricians
  • Electronic engineers
  • Suppliers of electronic devices

Why should you use BS EN IEC 61020-1- Electromechanical switches

Electromechanical switches are devices used to make, break, or change the route of electrical and electronic current flow in circuits.

BS EN IEC 61020-1 specifies the test method and test procedure for electromechanical switches. This test method helps in determining the withstand of the voltage in these switches. The resistance measurement is useful in determining the total electrical resistance of the conducting switching circuits.

Using BS EN IEC 61020-1, you can ensure the sustainability of these switches in different conditions. By applying BS EN IEC 61020-1 guidelines, you can improve the quality of these switches and ensure their safety.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN IEC 61020-1:2019 supersedes BS EN 61020-1:2009. BS EN IEC 61020-1:2019 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 61020-1:2009. These include:

  • Returning force test method is added to this standard
  • Sulphur dioxide test is added to this standard
  • Soldering, soldering iron method is added to this standard
  • New changes are made in the environmental testing method
  • Annex A that is quality assurance procedures are removed
