BS EN 61810-7 is a British standard as a part of the IEC 61810 series that states the test and measurement procedures for electromechanical elementary relays. BS EN 61810-7 covers basic considerations which are, in general, common to all types of electromechanical elementary relays. Supplementary requirements may be necessitated by specific designs or applications. 

The test and measurement procedures of BS EN 61810-7 are described as individual provisions covering a specific requirement. When combining them in a test programme, care must be taken to ensure that preceding tests do not devalue subsequent ones. 

Note 1: To improve the readability of BS EN 61810-7, the term “relay” is generally used in place of “electromechanical elementary relay”.

Between the control circuit and the load, the electromechanical relay serves as an interface. A relay requires only a modest amount of power to switch on, but it can control something that consumes much more. Contact resistance is substantially lower in relays. High-frequency circuits may benefit from the lower contact capacitance. Transients are less likely to turn on relays than solid-state switches.
