This knowledge can be obtained by various approaches, including a site survey of an intended location, the technical assessment of the equipment and system, as well as the general literature. The descriptions of electromagnetic environments in PD IEC/TR 61000-2-5 are predominantly generic ones, considering the characteristics of the location classes under consideration. Hence, it should be kept in mind that there might be locations for which a more specific description is required in order to conclude on immunity requirements applicable for those specific locations.
Classification of the electromagnetic environment is based on the classification or a description of the electromagnetic phenomena prevailing at typical locations, not on existing test specifications. However, given a choice among equal possibilities, harmonization with existing test specifications (if appropriate) will simplify the situation and promote easier acceptance of the recommendations. The definition of the electromagnetic environment in PD IEC/TR 61000-2-5 refers to “electromagnetic phenomena”. The term "disturbance degree" is used in PD IEC/TR 61000-2-5 to quantify the phenomena contributing to the electromagnetic environment and it is independent of any consideration of test levels. The term “severity level” is not used in PD IEC/TR 61000-2-5 to describe the environment, as it is reserved for specifying immunity test levels in other IEC publications.
